2/1/17 Words for Teenagers
What I hear this man demanding is that teenagers devote themselves to labor because that is what they owe the world. First of all, I am skeptical that this judge devotes his life to "mowing the lawn" or "washing the windows." This kind of life isn't realistic for any human in life, it sounds more like the life of a robot or a slave. My message to this judge is that you are not my master, nor are you wiser than the rest of us. I'm sorry your life has not been more fulfilling than completing chores and "reading a book," but our purpose in life is to create as many transformative experiences as possible. The teenage years are great for exploring, and should be spent doing so. All great people start with a dream. Sacrificing that would be a great loss for society.
2/1/17 Ted Talk Reflection
I completely see where this woman is coming from. I found the fifty year-old businessman's testimony about not wanting to have a conversation with his peers at work especially interesting. Adults always tell us not to be so invested in technology and so into our phones, but; in reality, their world isn't all that different from ours. I will try not to be on my phone at school or work very much at all, and will definitely create time for quiet reflection. I have gotten away from that lately. This connected world is great for connecting us to like-minded people around the globe, but I hope it doesn't take the place of real conversation.
